The Twin Cities offer a theater circuit on par with that of New York. The Hennepin district of Minneapolis has more than 30 establishments and around 100 theater groups, with venues of interest including The Guthrie Theater at Vineland Place. This internationally renowned theater opened in the 1960s and has since offered productions differing from the big budget productions at Broadway.

The Historic Orpheum Theater opened in the 1920s and after a renovation in 1993 it has hosted performances such as 'The Lion King' and other Broadway productions, while also hosting concerts. For a more inventive feel in Minneapolis, head for the Hennepin Stages (previously named the Hey City Theater) and see a range of musicals and comedies that require lots of audience participation. Other theaters include Historic Pantages, Historic State and the Theater in the Round. With its seating arranged in a circle overlooking a center stage, the latter offers a number of great alternatives to the city's otherwise mainstream productions.
